Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback at Unhinged Healing

What Is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a research-supported form of brain-based training that helps your nervous system function with more balance, stability, and ease. It works by measuring your brainwave activity and giving your brain immediate audio or visual feedback. With this information, your brain naturally begins to shift toward healthier, more regulated patterns.

In her work on developmental trauma, Sebern Fisher explains that neurofeedback “raises the brain’s threshold to stress and increases resilience by increasing stability.” In other words—your brain learns to stay calmer, think more clearly, and move more flexibly between states.

How Does Neurofeedback Work?

Your brain produces electrical signals as billions of neurons communicate. An EEG (electroencephalogram) reads those signals and shows how different areas of your brain are functioning. Faster brainwaves tend to support thinking, focusing, and problem-solving, while slower waves support rest, relaxation, and internal regulation.

When these rhythms fall out of balance, symptoms often follow.

Neurofeedback helps re-train these patterns by encouraging certain brain areas to “speed up” or “slow down” as needed. Over time, this promotes:

  • greater stability

  • improved emotional regulation

  • smoother transitions between states of arousal

  • overall resiliency in the nervous system

As training progresses, your brain learns to maintain these improvements on its own—without ongoing sessions.

What Concerns Can Neurofeedback Help With?

Conditions with published scientific evidence for effectiveness include:

  • ADHD / ADD

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • Sleep disorders

  • Learning disabilities

  • General relaxation training

Conditions with strong clinical reports and growing evidence include:

  • Attachment difficulties

  • OCD

  • Borderline Personality Disorder

  • Eating disorders

  • Chronic pain

What to Expect During a Session

Your neurofeedback journey begins with a qEEG brain map, which helps identify the patterns contributing to your symptoms. Once reviewed, we begin tailored neurofeedback training sessions.

During each session:

  • Sensors (electrodes) are gently placed on your scalp based on your individualized protocol.

  • These sensors read your brain’s electrical activity—nothing goes into your brain.

  • Sophisticated software translates that activity into auditory feedback (often a chime or sound pattern).

  • Your brain automatically adjusts based on this feedback, learning to self-regulate in more adaptive ways.

Sessions may include anywhere from 30 seconds to an hour of active training, depending on how your brain responds that day. Some people notice shifts immediately; others progress more gradually.

A full course of neurofeedback often ranges from 35–40 sessions, though individuals with TBI, degenerative neurological conditions, or complex trauma histories may benefit from longer-term support to maintain gains.

Why I Chose This Path

I’m currently training under Jessica M. Eure, LPC, BCN, BCB, QEEG-D of the Virginia Center for Neurofeedback and working toward Board Certification through BCIA. I chose this path because I’ve seen firsthand how much faster and more stable healing becomes when we bring the brain into the conversation.

This isn’t just about symptom reduction. It’s about nervous system transformation.
